Internship FAQs
How do I qualify for the Internship program?
Student Qualifications:
ITS tax school students qualify for the internship program when they have successfully completed at least our Basic 30-hour tax preparation course and meet IRS standards.
IRS Standards included below: (If you answer “Yes” to any of the questions listed below, you are not eligible to participate in the internship program.)
- Have you ever appeared before or been sanctioned by a professional body, federal or state agency for alleged misconduct?
- Has any application you filed with a court, government department, commission, or agency for admission to practice ever been denied or rejected?
- Have you been convicted of a felony?
- Has any Internal Revenue Service office ever held you ineligible for limited practice without enrollment?
- Are you currently delinquent in filing your Income Tax Return(s) with the IRS or in paying your taxes to the IRS?
Note: Students in CA and OR must complete at least the required qualifying course to be licensed in those states in order to qualify for the internship program.
Employer Qualifications:
Tax preparation firms, as well as CPA and Law Firms that provide tax services, can register to participate in the internship program. The intern employer is responsible to provide the opportunity for the Intern to obtain a meaningful experience and must agree to the requirements and terms and conditions listed here.
Why should you consider an internship?
This is a unique program that enables us to match up our tax school graduates and prospective employers for an internship.
- It’s a chance to get your foot in the door at a company that might not be currently hiring. Show them how great you are so that you are at the top of their list when they are hiring.
- It’s the perfect way to start honing your new skills and gain experience.
- You’ll learn about the company and decide if it’s a place you would really like to work if the opportunity presents itself.
- You’ll get hands on experience that you can take with you anywhere.
- The internship may have a flexible schedule.
- It’s a great way to network and meet people. The company you have an internship with may not have an opening for you but they may know a company who does and they could recommend you.

How does the internship program work?
After successful registration of the internship program, we review our database to see if there is a match in your area. If there is, we will notify both parties and share contact information. What happens after that point is between the employer and the prospective Intern.
If I take a course at another tax school, can I register for your internship program?
No. The internship program is strictly for the benefit of students who have completed a course with The Income Tax School.
If I register as an employer, am I guaranteed an intern?
No. We will do our best to find a match for everyone. However, submitting a registration is not a guarantee that there will be an Intern available in your area.
If I register as an Intern, am I guaranteed an internship and/or a job?
No. We will do our best to find a match for everyone. However, submitting a registration is not a guarantee of an Internship (paid or unpaid if both parties agree) or a job.
Are these Interns college students? I am trying to figure out why you are doing this other than the fact that you can recruit tax preparers as well.
The students are enrolled in e-learning courses of The Income Tax School, a division of Peoples Income Tax, which is a private career school certified by the State Council of Education for Virginia (SCHEV). They are trained in basic income tax preparation and may continue on to study advanced individual and small business tax preparation in our Chartered Tax Professional certificate program. We teach our students how to prepare individual and small business tax returns, which is rarely taught in college degree programs and almost never covered as completely as in our comprehensive courses. We are doing this as a benefit to our students to help them on their career path as a Tax Professional.
