Do I have to buy hard copy books?

Hard copy books are completely optional. Some students prefer to work through reading materials offline and simply use the online platform to complete assignments, quizzes, and tests. The hard copy books are also a useful tool for tax preparers to use as a reference after they’ve completed the course and are filing tax returns in the field. You do not have to wait for your hard copy book to be shipped to you, but you can if you wish.Back To Top

I purchased a bundle/certificate program with books, but only received one book. Why?

Bundles and certificate program are products that include multiple courses designed to be taken in order. Depending on when you purchase, you could start your first course and by the time you’re ready to start the next one a new edition could be available. For this reason, we ship books one at a time to make sure you get the most up-to-date version available.Back To Top

Which edition should I choose: Standard or California?

The Standard edition of our courses contains information about federal tax law and is applicable to all US tax preparers. A California edition is available for our Comprehensive and Small Business I courses, which includes all the information of our Standard editions but adds a California state tax law supplement. If you’ll be filing returns for California residents and businesses, choose California. Otherwise, choose Standard.Back To Top

What grades do I need to pass the course?

A minimum 70% average cumulative grade is required to pass the course. This includes all quizzes, tests, and the final exam. You will be allowed 2 attempts for all quizzes and tests, and 1 attempt for the final exam. You must successfully complete each section before you are able to move on to the next one.

Although up until a few years ago I had always attended seminars to gain my required education, I was finding less comprehension from the spoken words of a class speaker. Since I have been taking the online courses provided by “The Income Tax School” I find the information easier to comprehend than day dreaming in a classroom.

  2. V. Denise Bickle, EA

The Income Tax School has a very good and comprehensive textbook. I have looked through it and would definitely recommend it. It is as good or better than the extensive training the tax chain companies use.

  3. Michelle

I have taken a number of advanced and CE classes from ITS.Compared to other providers, I can only say that ITS offers probably the best educational classes. If you truly want to study and actually learn something, take their classes. They are well worth what you pay. I have now passed 2/3 of the SEE and am studying for the last part. The ITS courses I took in advanced taxation really helped me. They are also very responsive if you ever have an issue – either with the class or if you just have questions. I found the instructors to be very responsive and helpful.

I love the fact that I can read online or with the book, I can go through the test on paper, and then enter the answers and the results are instant.

I am just finishing the first Module for the Comprehensive Income Tax Course, and I am enjoying it. The program is easy to follow in a step by step manner that makes the information very understandable. I would recommend this program to others because there arent any income tax schools in my area.

  8. Barry Kotar

I found the course challenging, informative, and interesting. I appreciate the direction that you provided at various times during the process of taking this course. Now on to the IRS exam. But first, a few weeks’ vacation. I’ll be back for additional training in the coming months and years. Thanks again.

  9. Rebecca Neilson

Read thru the Guides that Chuck sent me and they are very complete. Much of the information is similar to what I used at Liberty. However he has it in an orderly and easy to follow format. If this is an indication of the courses he offers I would refer anyone interested to check out his courses. The prices for his courses are very reasonable as I also checked out his website.I have no financial interest and am not being compensated for this.

  10. Dan (US-Taxman)

My wife has taken the Basic course and now just finished the Intermediate course [Note: the Basic and Intermediate are now combined as the Comprehensive Course]. It is very comprehensive with printed books, online material to download, online tests etc. also great instructor support and forums to interact with other students. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about learning the tax business. My wife is a Filipino with no prior knowledge of any kind about US taxes and she got a 93 percentile score on the Intermediate final exam, which speaks volumes about the course.

I have been preparing taxes for 12 years but I learned some stuff from her course just answering her questions once in a while. She is going on to the Advanced course starting as soon as we get through this year’s tax season.

  11. Stuart

I recently completed the Income Tax School’s Basic Tax Course (the first half of the Comprehensive Course) and I had an excellent experience. This is the first course I have taken with ITS. Although an accountant, I have had limited exposure to taxes since two college courses that I took over 25 years ago. The materials were very good and the web formatting and online tools were logically organized and easy to use. But what was really outstanding and special was the instructor support: questions e-mailed to instructors were answered quickly and clearly and all relevant issues were addressed. In addition, the instructors were always open to suggestions I made for improving the materials. I plan on using ITS again and would recommend the school without hesitation to anyone looking to improve their knowledge of taxation.

  12. Bill

I thought the course was for the most part easy to follow and the assistance of the instructors was a lifesaver. The difficulty came from reading the material, and then when doing the review problems, it was often not very clear where certain items went or that they could or should be used somewhere. I believe if every chapter had a sort of walk through version of a tax form that included the material so you can see where things go and what you are looking for, it would make things much clearer for when you do your problems and to use as a reference. The IRS instructions are often like reading another language which isn”t much help. And when doing it all long hand on paper, I am pretty sure I singlehandly used a small forest, which made it hard to send in my copies to the instructors to correct my mistakes and see what I did wrong. Too bad there is no way to incorporate an online sheet to fill in and the instructors could review your work, OR it could simpy tell you what numbers are wrong and where to reference or maybe a hint to fix it. Just my 2 cents, rounded down to 0.

Dear Bill, You’ve touched on suggestions that’ve been on our wishlist for some time. We plan to add a “walk-through” to our Comprehensive course chapters to help students with “where to put this” or “how to enter that”. We’ve also wanted an online fill-in form for students to use, that can be saved & be available for review when needed. This is a little more difficult to implement, but we hope to unveil both of these enhancements in 2012. Students will still be required to answer Learning Activity Questions; however, maybe we’ll save some trees by eliminating paper forms! Thank you for taking time to share you feedback & suggestions. By the way, we think our instructors are lifesavers, too!

I am just starting my accounting practice and needed to better understand the basics of personal and small business taxes. While I never intended to provide tax services in my accounting practice, I knew that a client’s business decisions can have an impact on their tax situation and I wanted to be able to provide that level of insight and knowledge for my clients. I’m pleased to say that I’ve changed my mind after taking this course and am excited to take my practice to the next level by offering tax preparation services. The course was very well organized online, rigorous but self-paced, and well supported throughout the course by experienced tax instructors at The Income Tax School. The curriculum is written in layman’s language with plenty of straight-forward examples and relevant problem sets that crystallize the concepts well and is a good adjunct to the IRS publications which can be technical at times. I highly recommend this course for anyone interested in learning the basics of income tax concepts and preparation. It has helped me gain valuable insight and knowledge I need to better serve my clients and added a new stream of revenue potential to my practice.

  15. Judy

This was a great course. The format was easy to follow along with and doing tax returns right from the start was wonderful. I feel like I have a good base. The course built upon that base, adding concepts and additional info in a logical manner. I think that the quizes, review questions and learning activities covered the material in an appropriate way to make sure you grasped the concepts presented. I am looking forward to doing tax returns.

  16. Mary Ann Bone

I have looked at The Income Tax School”s RTRP program for testing and it”s great. Very extensive!

  17. Mimi Elmer

I started as a secretary, moved to office manager and I’m now given some of the simpler returns to do. They are then reviewed by a CPA. No mistakes so far! And, I’m actually able to catch some of the other preparers’ mistakes when I process their returns.

  18. James

I have been very impressed with the completeness of the courses. They provide for a complete education in the specific areas.

  19. Jacob Bauer

Books have become reference works for me.

  20. Charlotte Deal

I started working for a CPA in June of 2010. At this time I had no experience with tax returns at all. I started the Basic & Intermediate tax courses (for Individuals) around September or October of 2010 and was completing tax returns by February. I have gotten many compliments from my employer and coworkers about how much I learned in such a little amount of time. I really liked The Income Tax School and would take another class in the future if needed. The instructors were very helpful!

  21. Terri Ryman

You do a fine job. I’ve had three employees take your Basic and Intermediate courses, and all three are now doing well in tax preparation…really has made my business grow!

  22. Wyatt

I have taken The Income Tax School Basic, Intermediate, Advanced I and Advanced II classes and thought they were excellent! The Income Tax School lead me to pass the SEEs and become and Enrolled Agent. Their pricing is also very reasonable. I will always recommend The Income Tax School for furthering your education.

  23. Judy

I am working on the class as I can and find that you have put a lot of effort into designing a class that is most informative and helpful. I am very impressed and will recommend your school to others. I have been preparing tax returns for several years without previous formal training but have learned several things already I had not come across before and was glad to have the opportunity to learn about these issues. Thank you.

  24. Tim

I’m a 51 year old with absolutely no income tax experience at all. I have never prepared my own taxes. My 2009 return was somewhat complex with some financial things we had done thru the tax year, not to mention pretty costly. After looking over our prepared return, I started to think why can’t I do this? Well I got online and started to research taxes and how to prepare them. I researched numerous schools and settled on the Income Tax School. What initially drew me to ITS was the price and the fact that I could do just part I (the first half of the Comprehensive Course) and do part II at a later date. As soon as I started I was hooked. I took the course seriously and completed it in about six weeks. Every question I had was answered very promptly. After I complete part II Intermediate (the second half of the Comprehensive Course) I plan on opening my own home tax preparer business during tax season. The Income Tax School has helped me gain the knowledge and confidence I need to start my own business. Trust me, if I can learn and do this then with the help of ITS you can too.

  25. Roselyne

I sure enjoyed the classes and learned a lot. I did like the fact of having “real life cases” practice.

  26. Cheryl

I am a career changer and this course was perfect training for my new job with a CPA firm. My new employer is also impressed at how much I know because of the training. I worked hard on the courses, but I’m very satisfied at the results.

  27. Enrico

I enjoyed this course very much (the first half of the Comprehensive Course). The course helps you understand the basics of income tax return preparation, but you will be able to prepare many tax returns with just this basic training. What impressed me the most is the efficiency of the instructors. Send you question, check your email after an hour or two, and you’ll find an instructor’s response to your questions. Instructors’ answers are very detailed and very clear.

  28. Robin Harrelson

I grade your school and courses an A+. I was very impressed with the way each course was presented.

  29. Robin

I would like to say that I truly love the Income Tax School. I love the convenience of online course taking and it is presented so well and easy to use. I passed my Tax Preparer Competency Test. It was 120 questions long and had 2 1/2 hours to complete, but I completed mine in only 1 hour.

I ‘accidentally’ took this course when they sent this one to me instead of the 4 hour course so I may be skewed in my outlook. The federal information was clear and presented well, the California information was in many case cut and pasted from the pubs. I can read those for free, thank you. But my biggest complaint is that the review and test questions use outdated information (i.e. SSA social security number verification is no longer available by phone and unless you had the info from before they discontinued that service you could NOT find that answer anywhere) Overall, for a self-paced education, it was better than many I’ve tried. The instructor did answer questions quite promptly.

Dear Mary, Thank you so much for your feedback. We’ve begun our updates for the upcoming year and will review the concerns you’ve voiced. We always try very hard not to copy & paste items straight from the Pubs for the very reason you stated. Tax pros from CA have assisted in writing/updating some of our CA material; however, in the last couple of years we’ve taken the material back in-house for writing & updating so that we have more quality control. We’ll perform a more thorough review of this course during the updating process. Your feedback is very valuable to us & we appreciate the time you have taken to share your experience.

The materials are very well written, to the point, no stray points or digressions. The online materials are tightly controlled so that you must actually complete all reading, homework, tax returns, and quizzes before moving onto the next step. This was impressive to me. When I teach tax classes, I plan on using these materials.
